Twenty people are being reported missing after a cargo ship struck Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge in what rescue officials are calling a “mass casualty event.”
Maryland governor Wes Moore declared a state of emergency while rescuers searched for people in the water. In a statement, Moore said: “We are working with an interagency team to quickly deploy federal resources from the Biden administration.”
“Multiple people” were reported on the bridge at the time of the collapse.
The Dali container ship that struck the bridge was chartered by Danish shipping company Maersk, which is “closely following” the situation. According to its website, the ship was due to set sail from Baltimore early today for a one-month journey to Colombo.
Built in 1977, the Francis Scott Key Bridge is a steel structure that carries the Interstate 695 highway over the Patapsco River, southeast of the Baltimore metropolitan area.
The bridge is more than 8,500 feet, or 1.6 miles, long in total. Its main section spans 1,200 feet and was one of the longest continuous truss bridges in the world upon its completion, according to the National Steel Bridge Alliance.
Referred to locally as the Key Bridge, it was later named after the author of the American national anthem.
